Human Development- 2 different assignments-Chapter 13 and chapter 14 Assignment

Human Development- 2 different assignments-Chapter 13 and chapter 14 - Assignment Example Several theories have been presented in an attempt to explain the human growth and development process; some basing on related factors while others adopting different bases. This paper explores the cognitive development during the early adulthood stage relative to college students and establishment of intimates as the key crisis of adulthood as expounded by Erikson. Early adulthood refers to the late stages of the adolescent stage. According to scholars, this stage of development is characterized by the individuals’ resilience and ability to bring their life under control after tumultuous adolescent stage. The person starts to clearly understand the consequences of their actions and risky behavior that characterize the previous stage- adolescent stage; they start developing lasting mutual relationships especially with the opposite sex. According to Arnett (66), early adulthood cognitive development is characterized by five features. These attributes include instability, identity exploration, self-focus, divided feeling and a feeling of possibilities. Under instability, individual in this stage experience divided commitment towards education, work and love; they face a challenge of adequately allocating their available time to the relationships/activities signifying their transition to adulthood. Under identity exploration, an individual start detaching themselves from peer groups to personal life; they value self-focus more than peer-focus that is they abandon social obligations to autonomy. The fourth feature, age of possibilities, indicates that the person begins comprehending the prospects of transforming their lives from adolescence to adulthood; however, they may experience the fifth feature- divided feeling. The double feeling leaves the person perplexed of their exact stage; as much as they consider themselves as not fully fledged adults, they never view themselves as adolescents. This is very much

‘Cousin Kate’ by Christina Rossetti Essay Example for Free

‘Cousin Kate’ by Christina Rossetti Essay This Victorian poem is about the narrator (a fallen woman), the Lord and Kate. It is a ballad which tells the story from the narrator’s perspective about being shunned by society after her ‘experiences’ with the lord. The poem’s female speaker recalls her contentment in her humble surroundings until the local ‘Lord of the Manor’ took her to be his lover. He discarded her when she became pregnant and his affections turned to another village girl, Kate, whom he then married. Although the speaker’s community condemned the speaker as a ‘fallen’ woman, she reflects that her love for the lord was more faithful than Kate’s. She is proud of the son she bore him and is sure that the man is unhappy that he and Kate remain childless. Some readers think that she feels more betrayed by her cousin than the lord. This poem is a dramatic monologue written in the Victorian era. Structure The poem is written in first person narrative. It has 6 stanzas of 8 lines: One stanza each on the narrator, the Lord and Kate; stanza 4 contrasts the position of the narrator and Kate; stanza 5 criticises Kate and stanza 6 focuses on the narrator’s triumph at having a child. Each stanza is the same length and each line has a similar rhythm, giving it a ballad-like feel. It could also be conveying the strength and perseverance of the narrator who has to face life in conflict with the expectations of Victorian society. Note that the tone changes as the poem progresses regret, accusation, bitterness, triumph. The rhyme scheme always connects the B (2nd line) of each couplet. E. g Stanza one – AB/CB/DB/DB. Sometimes the first line of the couplet is rhymed. The rhyme emphasises the last world to aid meaning. The regular rhyme could also suggest that narrator has not only been dominated by the Lord (because men and in particular men of a higher social standing) but is also trapped with Victorian social conventions (she is now a fallen woman in conflict with the values of her society). Sometimes the first line is rhymed as in Stanza 3 – AB/AB/CB/AB. In this case the words ‘Kate’, ‘gate’ and ‘estate’ are stressed in order to convey the way Kate has been elevated from her position in society. However in stanza 5 this rhyme of ‘true’ and ‘you’ contrasts the narrator’s strength of feeling with Kate’s. ‘Cousin Kate’ is written with an iambic rhythm. Generally, one line of the poem has three feet, and the next has four. The poem, therefore, generally follows the following pattern: da dum da dum da dum da dum da dum da dum da dum Iambic rhythms often follow the natural rhythm of speech, a little like a heartbeat. If we apply this to one of Rossetti’s lines, it reads as follows: â€Å"Because you were so good and pure†. Therefore the meaning of the words is captured in the line as specific words are stressed. The repetition of: ‘Why did a great lord find me out’, conveys the anger and bewilderment of the speaker at her change of circumstances, whilst the phrase: ‘good and pure’ has a hollow ring by its second occurrence. Thereafter, repeated phrases are altered to highlight the contrasting situations of Kate and the speaker: The community ‘call’ Kate ‘good and pure’, but ‘call’ the speaker ‘an outcast thing’. Kate ‘sit[s] in gold’, the speaker ‘sit[s] †¦ in dust’. The image of dust connects to a life of poverty and also suggests how she has been soiled by society. Whereas ‘gold’ suggests that her cousin has riches. Kate’s fate is to ‘sit †¦ and sing’, the speaker’s to ‘sit and howl’. This suggests the mental anguish that the narrator is experiencing at being abandoned whereas to ‘sing’ indicates that Kate is content. However, the speaker believes her ‘love was true’, while Kate’s ‘love was writ in sand’ suggesting that her love is stronger than Kate’s. The echoed structure in the final stanza – that Kate has ‘not got’ and is ‘not like to get’ the gift of a child – emphasises the speaker’s sense of triumph. Language The speaker’s questions in the first stanza express her anger and confusion at the experiences she has had to endure: ‘Why did a great lord find me out†¦ Why did a great lord find me out? ’ She suggests that before the arrival of the ‘great lord’, she was happy and ‘contented’ (line 3). She was not looking for a new situation in life. It came unexpectedly. The idea that the lord filled her heart with care suggests that she had less to worry about previously. She is angry that he made her anxious instead of happy and took her away from her friends, her ‘cottage mates’ (line 3). She questions her cousin Kate in stanza 4 suggesting that she loved the lord whereas her cousin did not marry for love. The speaker addresses her questions, laments and moans to Kate. She begins the third verse, ‘O Lady Kate, my cousin Kate’ and the fifth, ‘O cousin Kate’. Throughout, she employs a tone of accusation, repeatedly using the word ‘you’ as she compares Kate to herself. In the last four lines, the speaker draws her attention away from her bitterness at Kate and addresses her son. She calls him ‘my shame, my pride’ (line 45). The oxymoron highlights the conflict that she experiences at loving the Lord and her son but also knowing that she has defied moral convention. Through active and passive verbs Rossetti emphasises the powerlessness of women in Victorian society by associating the lord with a series of actions which take the initiative. He ‘f[ound]’ the speaker ‘out’ / ‘praise[d]’ her / ‘lured’ her / ‘wore’ her / ‘changed’ her / ‘cast’ her ‘by’ / ‘fooled’ her. These are harsh actions, which become more ominous with regard to Kate. Like a stalker, the lord: ‘saw’ her / ‘chose’ her’ / ‘watched’ her / ‘lifted’ her ‘To sit with him’ / ‘bound’ her/ ‘won’ her / ‘bought’ her. Like a hunter, the lord ‘f[ound]’ the speaker ‘out’, ‘lured’ her, then ‘chose’ his next victim in Kate, whom he ‘watched’, then picked up (‘lifted’) and ‘bound’. Both women are referred to as birds, with Kate seeming to be trussed and bound by her fine clothes and wedding ring. In ‘Cousin Kate’, the dove image draws on these ideas of hope and fulfilment and is a symbol of purity that stands in direct contrast to the contaminated state the speaker finds herself as she describes herself as ‘an unclean thing’ (line 15). However, she acknowledges that the tenderness associated with the dove is no match for Kate’s ‘stronger wing’. Even though the speaker claims that she ‘would  have spit’ and ‘[would] not have taken’ the lord, the fact that this is in the future conditional tense indicates that the reality of the situation is in fact very different – she will always be powerless. Alliteration is used throughout the poem: The soft innocence of the speaker before her life changed is conveyed by the soft M of ‘maiden’, ‘mates’ and ‘mindful’ in stanza 1 When the speaker claims that she was led to the lord’s house to lead a ‘shameless shameful life’, the sibilance in this line reinforces the joining together of oxymorons that these words perform. It also reflects the hushed manner in which the speaker was ensnared by the lord, taken in, then later cast aside The speaker’s anger shines through the harsh consonants of ‘Lady Kate, my cousin Kate’ In the final stanza, the speaker emphasises the close bond she shares with her son when she asks that he ‘Cling closer, closer yet’ (line 46). The emphasis here highlights her fear and together with the repetition of the word ‘closer’, suggests that it is for her own comfort, as well as her son’s, that they remain together. Strong images are used to convey the predicament of the narrator. She claims that the lord considered her as a ‘plaything’ (line 12) whom he could treat how he liked without any regard for her feelings. Much like the ‘silken knot’ (line 12) he wore around his neck (a cravat or tie), he treated her as a fashion accessory he could use and then cast away, rather than as an individual with her own needs. The speaker recognises that the lord ‘changed me like a glove’ (line 13). He used her and moulded her into a shape that suited him and then, like a glove that no longer pleases, dispensed with her completely. A glove is an intimate and personal object that fits itself around its user. By describing herself as a glove, the speaker acknowledges that she lost sight of her own needs and desires in an attempt to please and suit the lord. Essay title: Explain how Rossetti creates sympathy for the narrator in ‘Cousin Kate’. Use examples from the poem to support your answers.

The Conflict Between Conformity and Individuality in Willa Cathers Pau

The Conflict Between Conformity and Individuality in Willa Cather's Paul's Case Willa Cather’s â€Å"Paul’s Case,† displays the conflict between conformity and individuality through the main character, Paul. On a number of occasions, Paul is forced to lie and steal to escape the conformists who wish to control him and stifle his unique imagination. However, his lying, stealing, and attempts to escape the conformists, only force Paul into isolation, depression, and feeling a sense of shame for his individuality. Throughout the story one might see Cather’s constant contrast of individuality versus conformity, as well as Paul’s lying and stealing. Cather seems to draw the conclusion that extreme individuals, much like Paul are simply misunderstood, and not offered the acceptance they desire from conformist society. One way Cather contrasts individuality and conformity is through detailed descriptions of Paul’s character: Paul’s appearance, Paul’s unusual mannerisms, and Paul’s open criticisms of conformity. Collectively, these three characteristics assert Paul’s individuality. Paul’s appearance is described in detail at the beginning of the story and provides the foundation of his individuality: â€Å"Paul was tall for his age and very thin, with high, cramped shoulders and a narrow chest†(Pg. 1). One only needs to reach the second paragraph of the story and realize Paul does not fit in, which can be accredited to Cather’s careful word choice â€Å"for his age.† Most young individuals, specifically in Paul’s teenage age bracket, will struggle for acceptance from their peers; however it appears that Paul makes little effort in this regard. Paul’s unusual mannerisms are also worthy of analysis, and aid in creating a mental picture of this unusual young man. Cather uses Paul’s meeting with the faculty of his educational facility to convey the irritating and intimidating qualities of his mannerisms. She writes, â€Å"His teachers felt this afternoon that his whole attitude was symbolized by his shrug and his flippantly red carnation flower, and they fell upon him without mercy†¦. He stood through it smiling, his pale lips parted over his white teeth. (His lips were continually twitching, and he had a habit of raising his eyebrows that was contemptuous and irritating to the last degree)†(Pg.2). Combined with the description of Paul’s physical appearance, his mannerisms now... ...nearly always wore the guise of ugliness, that a certain element of artificiality seemed to him necessary in beauty†(Pg. 7). With this in mind, Paul’s actions seem deliberate, as if he knew what he was doing all along, again supporting the theory that he was simply wallowing in misery, crying for help. In conclusion, Willa Carther’s â€Å"Paul’s Case† is an interesting glimpse into the world of a young boy, who’s individuality is constantly in conflict with the conformist society that surrounds him. In attempts to escape this reality, Paul loses himself in a fantasy world of art, lies, and thievery. In this attempt to escape, Paul slips into isolation and depression. Carther in this regard is very careful on how she portrays Paul, to brink about some sympathy from the reader as he is simply a troubled young man. In the end, Paul’s individuality and societies refusal of him leads to Paul’s demise. The sympathy Cather creates for Paul leaves one questioning if society simply should have supported Paul’s individuality, instead of letting him slip away. Paul’s death seems to support this theory, as not a single reader would have wished such a cruel ending to the life of a dreamer.

Experimental Drug Therapies for the Treatment of Wet-Type Age-Related Macular Degeneration :: Medicine Medical Disease Papers

Experimental Drug Therapies for the Treatment of Wet-Type Age-Related Macular Degeneration In a society where technology has lengthened the average lifespan, age-related disorders present new treatment challenges. In the United States, senior citizens over the age of 65 account for 21% of the population (US, 2001). This group of people will experience changes in their perceptual systems as they age, making it harder for them to function. Some of these changes will occur systematically and naturally, while others will result from disease. In the case of vision, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment in the elderly population (Levin, 1997). Experts estimate that ten million senior citizens over the age of 75 suffer with AMD, approximately one third of Americans 75 and older (Levy, 1999). AMD attacks the retina of aging eyes and is found in two forms. The most common form diagnosed is dry-type AMD. In this disease, accounting for 85% of all AMD diagnoses (Thompson & Daniels, 1998), the layers of the retina deteriorate and thin in the fovea resulting in severe vision loss in the central line of vision. Often, fat deposits, called drucen, develop and further impair vision. Wet-type AMD makes up the remaining 15% of AMD diagnoses and progresses more rapidly and painfully than dry-type AMD. This form of AMD is responsible for severe visual impairment in 90% of all AMD cases diagnosed (Gisele & Bressler, 2001; Thompson & Daniels, 1998). Although dry-type AMD does not usually predict wet-type AMD, between 10-20% of patients with dry-type AMD eventually develop wet-type AMD (Gisele & Bressler, 2001). Wet-type AMD is characterized by choroidal neovascularization (CNV), or the growth of new blood vessels in the layers of the retina (Gisele & Bressler, 2001). Not only do these new capillaries impede vision by blocking incoming light, they also leak blood into the surrounding tissues causing further damage. Currently, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved two treatment techniques for wet-type AMD (Yam & Netting, 1999; Visudyne, 2000). Researchers first developed photocoagulation, a procedure utilizing lasers to cauterize new capillaries and seal leaks. Unfortunately, this treatment is only useful in approximately 10% of patients who seek it and, while photocoagulation does decrease vision loss, the results are only short-term and the risk of damage to nearby photoreceptors is high (Gisele & Bressler, 2001; Yam & Netting, 2001; Thompson & Daniels, 1998). The most recently approved treatment option is verteporfin photodynamic therapy, a two-step treatment approved by the FDA in 2000 (Visudyne, 2000).

Price Mechanism in a Capitalist Economy

In a capitalist economy, all the central problems are solved with the help of price mecha nism. In such an economy, no individual or a firm deliberately tries to solve the central problems; all economic activities operate automatically and there is no conflict anywhere. The basic reason for all this is that price mechanism brings about co-ordination in various sectors of economy and in various eco nomic activities. The important characteristic of such a system is that it is automatic and there is no institution or agency which regulates or operates it.The basis of price mechanism is that every commodity or service has a price which is determined with the help of supply and demand. Every commodity is bought and sold through money. If a person sells his services or commodity, he gets money and in lieu thereof he can buy goods and services which he needs. If there are more buyers of a commodity, its demand goes up and producers increase its production. On the other hand, if a comm odity is available in abundance, its supply increases, with the result its price goes down and producers reduce its production.Whenever there is a difference or dis equilibrium between supply and demand, price starts changing, with the result this difference disappears and again an equilibrium is established between supply and demand. demand and supply curves intersect each other at point E where price is OP and equilibrium output OQ. According to the schedule equilibrium price will be Rs. 10 because at this price demand and supply are equal. In a capitalist economy, all the central problems are solved with the help of price mechanism. Now we would sec as to how all the central problems—what to produce, how to produce and for whom to produce—arc solved with the help of price mechanism. 1. What to produce? In a capitalist economy, production of a commodity is decided by the forces of demand and supply. As the production of a commodity depends upon its demand and suppl y, in the same way aggregate output is determined by aggregate demand and aggregate supply. The level of output where aggregate demand and aggregate supply are equal is finally fixed as equilibrium output. In the aggregate output, what should be the quantities of different commodities. This decision is also taken by the equilibrium of demand and supply of different commodities. The production of the commodity is increased whose price goes up as a result of increase in its demand. On the other hand, if the demand of a commodity declines, its production is reduced. 2. How to produce? As the competition among consumers decides as to what goods should be produced, in the same way, the competition among the producers decides as to how goods should be produced.A commodity can be produced adopting a number of techniques. The method or technology which is the cheapest is adopted and the one which is costlier is abandoned. Therefore, the decision as to how goods should be produced depends on the prices of factors. A producer combines various factors for producing a commodity in such a way so that his production cost is minimum. For example, coal and diesel both can be used as fuel. If coal is cheaper in comparison to diesel, coal would be used and reverse would be the case if diesel is cheaper. In this way, the choice of technique of production or the factor combination depends upon the factor prices. In a country where there is abundance of labour and wages are low, more of labour and less of capital! would be used. On the other hand, in a country where there is less of labour and more of capital, capital-intensive techniques would be used. 3. For whom to produce? In a capitalist economy, production of commodities depends upon the buying capacity of the consumers in the market. It is a well known fact that the paying capacity of a consumer depends upon his purchasing power or his income.Besides this, the income of a consumer depends upon the fact as to how much his serv ices are demanded. Higher the demand for a person's services, higher would be his income. If the income of a consumer is more, his capacity to buy is more. In such a situation, production will be carried out for such persons whose incomes are more or who can pay. Therefore, in a capitalist economy, it is observed that price-mechanism facilitates more production of luxuries meant for rich people and less production of goods of mass consumption meant for poor people.

Compare Why and How Orwell and Swift Write Essay Example

Compare Why and How Orwell and Swift Write Essay Example Compare Why and How Orwell and Swift Write Paper Compare Why and How Orwell and Swift Write Paper Essay Topic: George orwell Literature Both Orwell and Swift create imaginary worlds in which to set their books. Jonathon Swift wrote Gullivers Travels in the 1720s. It was written as a travel book where the apparent hero, Lemuel Gulliver, travels to the wild and fantastic worlds of: Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa and Houyhnhnyms. When Gulliver returns to England, he is viewed as mad and becomes a laughing stock. George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1940s Britain (post world war two), and set it in the future, 1984. Orwells imaginary world is called Oceania. The main character of 1984 is a man called Winston Smith. The backdrop to Orwells novel remains the same throughout, but in Gullivers Travels, many strange and intriguing worlds are introduced. The main reason both authors create imaginary worlds is to criticize their own. Both books are satires. Swift writes Gullivers Travels as a travel book but it is actually meant as a reflection of 1720s England. This technique enables Swift to ridicule the government and express his views on how the country is run. It is now obvious to us that the purpose of Swifts novel is not to entertain us with an imaginary travel book but to expose the injustice sins in the world around him! Orwell also invents a fantasy world in which he can show a tragic side of what he hates or fears. He doesnt disguise his views with a different genre though; instead, he invents a totalitarian government with extreme rules and strict routines. Orwells 1984 creates a state similar to that in Nazi Germany or Communist Russia. The Big Brother in 1984 relates to Hitler. I think 1984 is Orwells attempt to show us what life would be like, had Hitler succeeded. Orwell and Swift share the same views on Power. Both feel that power is abused. In Gullivers Travels, people gain power in Lilliput by leaping and creeping. Swift patently believes that is the way people gain power in England. In 1984 power is completely abused. The totalitarian government wants absolute control. They are cruel, clever and use suffering against the population. They rule by keeping people loyal to the party. However, when Gulliver travels to the land of Brobdingnag, he has a different perspective on things. He is tiny in a world of giants and the culture of this country is somewhat different to that in Lilliput. Swift has created Brobdingnag as a utopia. In 1984 the imaginary world is very different. Orwell invents a dystopia. A nightmare world filled with destruction and suffering. In Brobdingnag the king rules with justice and for the benefit of the common good (everyone). In Oceania, 1984 the party rules for itself. Its aim is to destroy humanity: stamping on the human face forever . The two authors both use war to criticise England. In Gullivers Travels the Littlendians are constantly at war with the bigendians over the trivial matter of which end of the egg one should break. This petty but perilous argument is meant to relate to the constant feud between Catholics and Protestants. When Swift compares England to Lilliput (a land of tiny people), he is commenting on the small mindedness of the English. The inspiration for Orwells 1984 was from war. Whether the war is fictional or not, the government manipulate the tragic situation to keep the population loyal. Swift and Orwell share the same views on science and technology. When Gulliver visits the flying island of Laputa his is confused in a world of science. The flying island is occupied by many, many scientists with strange scientific theories. I believe the point of the scientists living on the island is to display Swifts view of all scientists having their heads in the clouds. The idea of the loadstone controlling the gravity of the island probably compares to Newtons gravity theory, which would have seemed preposterous to Swift. Technology also plays a big part in 1984. Telescreens enable the party to watch everybody all the time. This maximized the partys power because they could spy on people 24/7. In 1984 only 5% of the population are inner party members. This 5% abuse the power given to them. In Gullivers Travels the flying island of Laputa is used as a weapon. The scientists of Laputa tax the people below as they pass over them. The unfairness of taxation and colonialism could be compared to a cruel and demanding government or monarchy of England during the 18th century, over Ireland. Underneath Laputa is a land called Glubdubdrib. Gulliver searches for a place called The Academy. Here people are dedicated to science. They do stupid experiments like attempting to build houses from the roof downwards or trying to obtain sunlight from cucumbers. Another crazy experiment was a way of cutting down the language by carrying picture cards with you instead of speaking. This is very similar to the newspeak idea in 1984. That was also an attempt at cutting down the freedom of speech. In Gullivers Travels Gulliver comes across a historian. This man uses Gulliver to bring back famous historical figures i. e. Alexander the Great. This historian twists and exaggerates the truth. His lies are the same as those emitted by The Ministry of Truth. Both the Ministry and the historian are relied upon to supply truth and, ironically, both supply people with fiction not fact. In Gullivers Travels, Lemuel Gulliver visits the semi-tranquil, semi-chaotic land of Houyhnhnyms. Its chief inhabitants are talking horses. These horses are gentle, virtuous, rational and vegetarian. The land of the Houyhnhnms is, like Brobdingnag, a utopia. It is an unspoiled Shangri-la. Most unlike the war zones of 1984. There is no stealing, no lies and no disease in the land of the Houyhnhnms. These vices exist only among the Yahoos. The Yahoos are inferred as savage, cave man like, aggressive, excitable and carnivorous beings. They are, without question, a parody of humans. As Gulliver explains more and more to the houyhnhnms about his culture and human nature, the gentle beasts start to realize that the differences between man and Yahoo are very small indeed. Both are greedy, untrustworthy, vicious, sexually driven and self-obsessed beings. The Houyhnhnyms have no word in their language for lying. This is similar again to newspeak. After spending so much time with the talking horses, Gulliver realizes the error of his (and indeed all human) ways. Gulliver is mortified when he discovers the Houyhnhnyms see him as a Yahoo. I think its more than that though. I think Gulliver knows how similar humans and Yahoos are. He cannot deny his true nature. After experiencing a flawless and virtuous life with the Houyhnhnyms, Gulliver cannot bear the thought of returning to England and living among those who he now sees as Yahoos. I think the point of this final land is to illustrate the two sides of human nature and to force the reader to ask him or herself what a human being really is. I think heroes is too strong a word to use for the lead characters in both books. Both men are normal men. Therefore, both men are as weak as they are strong. Both end up being very isolated and independent. The final similarity between the men is that they are both diagnosed mad, but are in fact both very sane men. What makes them so isolated is the fact that they are misunderstood. Winston Smith is viewed as a tragic figure where as Lemuel Gulliver is seen as a comic figure. We pity Winston but laugh at Lemuel. I think this is because he comes back from the land of the Houyhnhnyms condemning mankind and we are, as Gulliver insists, an arrogant race so how could we possibly believe what he is telling us. If Swift believes what he is writing, he is not only mocking Gulliver, but also the whole of mankind and so, himself.

Yeatss poetic development

Yeatss poetic development Between the Celtic visions of THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN (1889) and the intellectual, often obscure poetry of the 1930s, Yeats produced a tremendous amount of works. In his early career Yeats studied William Blake's poems, Emanuel Swedenborg's writings and other visionaries. Later he expressed his disillusionment with the reality of his native country. Irish poet, dramatist and prose writer William Butler Yeats was born in Dublin on 13th June 1865 into an Irish Protestant family. His early years Yeats spent in London and Slingo, a beautiful county on the west coast of Ireland. the area was rich in both mythological and aristocratic traditions and, for both these reasons , is very frequently mentioned in Yeast's poems. His father, John Butler Yeats, a clergyman's son, was a lawyer turned to an Irish Pre-Raphaelite painter. He was passionately involved in London's artistic life in the 1870s as a supporter of the primary importance of pure emotion in art and an opponent of intellectual abst raction.en: Portrait of young William Butler Yeats by his ...Yeats's views on poetry and art were by no means unique, of course, deriving a great deal in particular from the "Pre-Raphaelite" group. He was already being encouraged to think of himself as a writer by his father, and the next nine years gave him a fine opportunity to soak his imagination in the Irish folk-lore which was to provide the impetus for much of his early poetry. In 1885 Yeats moved from Dublin High school to the Dublin School of Arts. In "Autobiographies" Yeats speaks of his youthful conviction:"only beautiful things should be painted , andthat only ancient things and the stuff of dreamswere beautiful"Shortly after joining the School of Art yeats also began to explore mysticism and the occult , encouraged by the famous , Madame Blavatsky , an interest which...

How Do the Writers Benjamin Zephaniah and Wole Soyinka Essays

How Do the Writers Benjamin Zephaniah and Wole Soyinka Essays How Do the Writers Benjamin Zephaniah and Wole Soyinka Essay How Do the Writers Benjamin Zephaniah and Wole Soyinka Essay Both poems address the subject of racism and attempt to tackle racial stereotypes and prejudices. They do so In a variety of ways, and differ greatly In their style of writing, whilst many devices run throughout them both. The poets choices within their poems affect the reader greatly and with varying effect. Whilst both poems attempt to tackle racism, they do so in different ways, both targeting different aspects. Telephone Conversation subtly attempts to convey the irrationality of racism, using irony as a device to convey the idea with subtlety and almost to the point of humor. The common racial stereotype people had of black people in 1962- the time of writing- is entirely repudiated as the audience read the poem and begin to gain some insight into the personality of the narrator; he was erudite, polite and educated: the complete antithesis of the widespread preconceptions people had at the time. Words like piped, rancid, and spectroscopic are not words that a savage brute would have in his vocabulary. HIS Intelligence Is further proven through his use of sarcasm and wit in response to the lady questions. Saying ridicules the social and cultural beliefs that accompanied schism In the ass. The fact that a black, supposedly savage man had the mental capacity to outwit a white, well bred woman of high social stature- Pressurized good-breeding. Voice, when it came/ Lipstick coated, long gold rolled Cigarette-holder piped. without her even releasing he is doing so, and do so with grace and eloquence, brings to light the absurdity that a person can be based on the color of their skin. The landlady speaks impolitely, almost unintelligibly, enhancing the narrators educated background, creating a strong contrast between the two, showing hat the white, well-bred woman is more similar to the stereotypical character of a black person, than the narrator- a black man, himself- Is. This again highlights the stupidity of racism In contemporary settings through the use of irony, as the audience are well aware that the narrator Is of greater mental capacity than the lady, showing that the preconceived Ideas many people possess have no grounds In fact and are based purely In speculation and hearsay. The devices used In Monologues are coronal to ten development AT ten poem, Walt ten mall polls AT interest being the devices themselves. The 1st and 2nd stanza, and the 5th and 6th correspond directly. In the first pair of stanzas the poet outlines a number of negative stereotypes people have of black people. It is clear from the first line that the poem is going to outline stereotypes in particular l am the type you are supposed to fear. The word Supposed indicates to the reader that prejudices are to be the focal point of the poem. Stereotypes in themselves are but ideas that one feels they are supposed to believe. Cephalic also makes clear the fact that the ensuing stanzas are to expand upon negative stereotype, through the use of the rod fear. The lack of punctuation at the end of the line leads one to believe that the point is to be expanded upon, which indeed it is. The 5th stanza begins in an almost identical manner : l am the type you are supposed to love. This creates the same effect of anticipation, but of positive stereotypes, as opposed to negative ones. The succeeding lines go on to introduce a number of negative statements about black people. It is interesting to note that they are stated in the 1st person, and as fact. The poet leaves no room for doubt when stating the prejudices people have. As opposed to the speculative approach Cephalic may have chosen, he specifically chose to use definitive statements -l talk in tongues. He avoided any ambiguity and stated the facts as they are, or rather, as is widely believed to be so due to the racial prejudices people had, and still have now. The same is applied to the 5th and 6th stanzas, but they contrast prodigiously with the 1st and 2nd as they state positive stereotypes that may be applicable to black people, too. These are stated as fact, as the negative stereotypes were. As with the opening lines of the first and fifth stanza, l am the type you are supposed to fear and l am the type you are supposed to love, the lines correspond almost exactly. The succeeding lines of both stanzas Black and foreign and and mysterious appear on first glace to be antonymous in meaning, with the latter pair of words being a positive stereotype. Whilst the words Black and Foreign appear neutral when used alone, but when utilized in conjunction with each other, and in such a forthright manner, that the audience perceive it as a negative stereotype. The contrasting Dark and mysterious is used in a positive manner, used to express an optimistic view, highlighting the appeal some people find in mysterious people- those with hidden depth of character. Whilst at first this statement may appear to be almost directly opposing to the aforementioned Black and foreign, on careful inspection one notices they appear to be synonymous. Black and Dark have the same meaning, as too do foreign and Mysterious. When placed together however, in the forms Cephalic uses in the poem- Black and foreign and Dark and mysterious- the meanings alter entirely. The statement requires but a different point of view for the meaning to differ ridiculously. Cephalic was intending to highlight the effects of the prejudiced views and opinions on the people they are directed towards. He is attempting to inform the audience that the people they believe to be Uneducated and frightening may in fact be quite the contrary, it Just requires a different point of view. The structure plays a strong part in this, too. With the first two stanzas offering negative stereotypes, and the latter two negative, Cephalic offers the audience the opportunity to decide for themselves on which viewpoint they choose to take; he lets men make ten sconce winner to Judge, Ana In along so De racist, or to KICK at Alack people for what they really are: human beings. Our ball will be in your court. / How will you feel? Cephalic is asking the readers to make a decision. In stating that Our ball will be in your court he states that their life will be in their hands. The metaphor tells that it is their turn to Take a shot. This statements does, however create a large divide between the black people, and the poet himself, and those who discriminate against them. The poem insinuates that it is up to them to make a session; they can choose to break the divide and end the separation and prejudice- supporting the latter stanzas and taking the opportunity to give the unknown a chance- not to Judge. It is quite actively involving the audience, asking a question and requiring them to think. The word you, a 2nd person pronoun, makes the poem so much more personal and thought provoking. The poet wants to get the readers involved in keenly deciding on the future of racism. He is attempting to involve each individual, to show that it depends on each person to determine whether or not racism is ostracizes from todays society. The separation into stanzas is vital to each of the poems. Neighbors very significant, very structured stanzas, contrast strongly with Telephone Conversations unpredictable and spontaneous structure, that reflects the impulsive, unrestrained nature of its content, and of its title, Telephone conversation. The poem is structured in a single stanza, with lines varying in length. The only major recognized structural form used is that of a conversation. The dialogue exchanged between the two characters in the poem clearly fits the parameters of an A B conversation, w ith speech being exchanged between the two harassers in succession. This is easily recognized whilst reading the poem. The structure and a variety of other features are used to reinforce the significance and relevance of the title. The poet has intentionally included these subtle reminders of the content to intimate the theme of a telephone conversation through the specific lack of structure, subtly reminding the reader that the telephone conversation is the focal point of the text. Another structural feature the poets use to tackle racism, is the manner in which the poems are written in 1st person. SST person, whilst often Ewing very restrictive, serves in both of the poems to personalize them, allowing readers to empathic easier, as it seems as if the poems are actual thoughts and feelings of an individual. Telephone Conversation uses the narrative viewpoint to make the event that the poem narrates seem more realistic. Had not misheard ARE YOU LIGHT/ OR VERY DARK To the reader, the poem becomes more lifelike, more personal, simply through the use o f the pronoun l. Having it recounted by a witness, and hearing their thoughts and feelings on the situation make the reader feel more involved. Where 3rd person can distance the reader, 1st errors draws them closer to the content of the poem. In Neighbors, Cephalic begins the poem with the word l. This makes the reader realism, almost instantaneously, that the poem is about an individual. The poem continues to inform of the many negative stereotypes surrounding the darker skinned. Later in the poem he does the same, but with positive preconceptions instead. Placing these beside the word l has the same effect as in Telephone Conversation- to involve the reader, drawing them in. It helps the audience to realism that Judgments made in the poem are commonly made. The 1st person pronoun helps to ground the poem, enhancing Its realms Ana Delegable let, snacking ten reader In I TTS stark accelerations- l am ten type you are supposed to fear. The reader realizes that these things are indeed happening today. Cephalic was hoping to achieve Just this effect. The poems also share many similarities in their titles, the most noticeable of which being the everyday, commonplace nature of their titles Neighbors and Telephone Conversation. Both cover such a broad spectrum of subjects, encompassing much into their semantic field, that from reading the title it is impossible to guess the intent of the poems. The mediocrity of the titles, in comparison with the nature of them highlights the fact that racism is indeed a common occurrence. Both Neighbors and Telephone conversations are found commonly in everyday life, and the titles are used as a device to highlight the prevalence racism has in societies today. This is a trait both poems share. The simplicity of both titles contrast strongly with the content. A straightforward title lowers ones expectations of the poem, so that when it is read the content is all the more shocking and hard hitting. Whilst both titles share this, the differ too; If you compare Telephone Conversation with Neighbors you notice that Neighbors seems to be rather more personal than Telephone Conversation. Neighbors live in close contact, seeing each other on a regular basis. The use of this rather more personal term helps one familiarize themselves with the poem. Cephalic wants the audience to personalize themselves with the poem. The nature of the poem in itself is more personal, making use of more 2nd person pronouns and actively involving the reader. The much more intimate title as the effect of involving the reader, preparing them for the content. In contrast to this, Telephone Conversation seems altogether more sterile, less affable than Neighbors. Saying wants the reader to distance themselves from the situation, taking a wider view on the situation. He is using the title as a device to show that impersonality can be vital when viewing racism. On reading the poem itself you realism it is often necessary to take a step back from situations such as those narrated in the poem, to realism the Judgments many make of individuals are inequitable and unjustified and should be abolished. The two titles do the opposite; one serves to distance the audience from the content, whilst the others purpose is to close the gap between the reader and the poem. Perhaps less obviously than the devices, the content is used to tackle racism too. As well as the previously mentioned subtexts, Saying Cephalic address a number of issues in their poems. Whilst Telephone Conversation is a poem of inequalities, Neighbors comes across much more balanced. Telephone conversation raises a number of issues, only one of which being the substandard treatment of black people. It highlights a hierarchical scale, at he bottom of which black people resided. It does however bring sexism to light, too. It is fairly significant that the antagonistic persona in the poem is female. In asses England, sexism was as common as racism, and women were treated unfairly. Whilst this is not explicitly cited within the poem, it is interesting to note. Taking this, and the manner in which the narrator treats the landlady with respect and as someone with higher social standing than himself - Madam, I warned- one notices that a social hierarchy is formed, at the bottom of which the narrator lies, despite his level f education, or wealth. The poem clearly places the landlady above the narrator. The author intended to subtly remind the audience of the treatment of women. The Implicit suggestion, serves to annulling ten poor treatment AT Dalai people: teeny were considered lower than women. In stark contrast to this, Neighbors revolves around the idea of balance and equality. The structure reflects this clearly, as do the devices. It more actively appeals to the audience for racial equality, and does so subtly. The peaceful manner in which Cephalic appeals for equality strongly opposes the approach Saying takes. In Neighbors, the poets focus on fairness makes the audience believe that racism is a set of scales, and their take on the situation could tip the scales either way. Its highly effective in stirring the hearts and minds of the readers. Poetry can affect the reader in such a wide variety of ways that it seems a perfect manner in which to voice ones thoughts and opinions. Both Cephalic and Saying prove in their poetry that it is an efficient way to tackle racism, and after reading both Neighbors and Telephone Conversation, it is made clear that poetry is exceptionally effective in doing so.

Historical Event in S. Korea that Affected on Family Business, Work Essay

Historical Event in S. Korea that Affected on Family Business, Work Experience, Life (1910-2000) - Essay Example A short history of how things were in the period 1910-1945 In 1910-1945, Korea was colonized by Japan. Changes were clearly noticed in the way the country carried out its political, social, economic endeavors. Not much was done in the business perspective of this country. The Japanese took over the Korea’s fertile lands, their buildings and businesses (Savada and Shaw 1990, 24). During this time, the country was in dire need for capital and advanced technology. Japan took up the responsibility of making sure that Korea had a good infrastructure. The Japanese were tough in their rule, and did their best to make sure that the Korean people assimilated the Japanese culture including the types of names, their kind of religion and even their national and official language. In this period, most citizens never thought of Korea’s economic development. They had lost their power and control of their own nation. They concentrated on earning for their basic needs and lived in extre me poverty. Fortunately, my great grandfather had a small store where he used to make and dye fabric which sustained him in the hard times. He was able to give his family a good life. My grandfather was advantaged to even go to Pai Chai Hak Dang, one of the expensive schools; this was rear at that time. Chai Hak Dang was the most expensive intermediate school then. Most students who were lucky to enroll into these schools dropped out because of lack of school fees. They were then employed in factories, publishing firms and in farming activities where they lived a desperate life due to the low income (Chance and Thatcher 2012). At last, the Japanese surrendered in 1945, and by 1948 the South Korean republic was formed by the democrats while the republicans formed the republic of North Korea. In 1950, South Korea was captured by North Korea. During this time, my grandfather was only 17 years old. He describes this time as the hardest that ever occurred on the Korean soil. The North Ko rean army and the USSR had joined hands to make life unbearable. He was scared and couldn’t stand the thought of him ever losing his family or his own life because people around him were dying every day and to the living, their hopes were destroyed because of the ongoing war and lack of basic needs. Young South Korean men were forcefully recruited into the army to fight, and my grandfather had to hide from them. It was impossible for him to look for necessities for his family. He stopped thinking about his bright future and only thought of how to survive. My grandfather’s family moved to safety in the south and on their way, they witnessed the death of many people. At this time, he was captured and joined the army forcefully at the age of 18 years. He was well educated, and this gave him the opportunity to join the cadet where he worked for ten years. Note that as from 1945, as noted by (Pike, 2011), many experienced Korean cadets came back to their country and had for med the armed forces. Under the rule of the U.S.A, the group was dissolved, and its members were taken into the defense force which comprised of 25,000 heads of soldiers. In 1945, the U.S.A. organized for an academy where the cadets were trained. The cadets were commissioned immediately they cleared their Basic English education. United States took up Korea on the 27th day of the seventh month in the year 1950 under the leadership of General McArthur. As a cadet in this organization, my

Is the development of oilsands essential to Canadas future prosperity Assignment

Is the development of oilsands essential to Canadas future prosperity Give Pros and Cons - Assignment Example Oil sand is a composition of many substances including water, soil, sand and bitumen. The bitumen is the thick and vicious oil. For bitumen to gain importance, it must be subjected into a series of treatments (Alberta Energy 4). The Alberta’s oil sands are of immense importance to both Canada and the rest of the globe as it supplies energy is not only more stable than other energy sources, but also reliable. Alberta’s oil sands utilize the most advanced form of technology in the extraction of oil, in addition to being the most developed in the whole world. Alberta’s oil has very many uses. Some of the uses include use of oil in driving cars, manufacturing of cosmetics, bubble gums and other substances like toothpastes. Researchers and developers have estimated that Alberta’s oil sand deposits will sustain Canada for a period of over a hundred and fifty years. However, with the current rate of extraction of oil at Alberta, the period of sustainability may fall below the 150 years. Even with the high rates of extraction, it is estimated that only a portion of about 20% has been extracted and the rest, 80% is yet to be extracted because of the huge depth the oil lays (Albertas Oil S ands Economic Benefits, pars. 2-3, 4). The major method of oil extraction at Alberta oil sands is through steam injection. The steam is exerted to liquefy the bitumen, and water has to be pumped in to mix with melted bitumen, to facilitate it to flow the surface, from the underground. During the separation process, bitumen is obtained and the rest of the mixture is poured away. It is estimated that 75% of bitumen is obtained, and 25% is lost to waste during the separation process (Albertas Oil Sands Economic Benefits, pars. 2 & 3, 4). Alberta’s oil sands are a great source of future prosperity to Canada. Oil is a major driver of a country’s economy. It is evident that all oil producing

Macroeconomics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 2

Macroeconomics - Essay Example Both are equally bad for the national economy. Current GDP, Inflation and Unemployment Rate The US GDP in year 2012 is estimated at 15.68 trillion. Real GDP in the US increased by 3.6 percent annually in the third quarter of 2013 over second quarter and the inflation rate is estimated at 1 percent in the month of October, 2013 that is lowest since October 2009. Similarly, unemployment rate is estimated at 7 percent in November 2013 down from 7.3 registered in the previous month (US Inflation Rate). Unemployment Rate in Past 10 years The following graph taken from the Bureau of Labor Statistics provides unemployment rates for last 10 years period in the US (Source: http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS14000000). It is interesting to note that during boom period of economy between 2003 and 2007, unemployment rate continued to slide. Post financial crisis it began rising rapidly and went up to almost 10% during 2009 and 2010. As of now it is hovering around 7 percent. Inflation Scenario in Past 10 years The US Federal Reserve states, "Inflation is a general increase in the overall price levels of the goods and services in the economy" (Federal Reserve). The Fed takes into account several price indexes while calculating inflation. The monetary policy is governed by the Federal Reserve and it aims at achieving maximum employment, low inflation and moderate long-term interest rates. The following graph shows inflation rates for last 10 years in the US. Source: http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-states/inflation-cpi It is amply clear that inflation rates vary significantly in last 10 years. During financial crisis, it touched to as low as -2 % in 2009 and prior to that it was at its peak at 6 percent in 2008. For last several quarters, the inflation rates are hovering between 1% and 2%. The Federal Reserve employs tools of monetary policy to control inflation and bring down unemployment rates as its major objectives. Monetary Policy Influences Inflation and Unemploym ent Usually, the Federal Reserve influences the federal funds rate that banks charge each other for short-term loans. These changes in short-term rates are eventually passed on to the businesses and households for their borrowing needs. Short-term rates also influence long-term rates such as residential mortgage rates, car loans etc. When the federal fund rate is reduced it triggers demand for goods and services. More demand for goods and services tend to generate more employment reducing unemployment rate that exist. Higher demand of the goods and services will also push the wage increase. Post 2007 financial crisis, the Federal Reserve took drastic steps to stabilize financial system and thereby the US economy. In this process, short-term interest rates were brought to near zero. Low interest rates aim at supporting businesses and households to finance new spending and thereby boost the economy and reduce the unemployment rate. However, in this process, there is possibility that i nflation rate would also start going up. As far as inflation rate is within the targeted rate, the Fed rate will keep using the tool of lowering the interest rate to boost the economy and generate the employment. The moment inflation starts exceeding the target rate, the fund rate will move in the reverse direction to cool down the economy and thereby control the inflation rate (Monetary Policy). Post 2007 financial crisis, when the economy was shattered the Fed resorted to the

Assessment Plan for Unit Cu697 Handle Mail Criteria 4.1 †5.2 Essay Example for Free

Assessment Plan for Unit Cu697 Handle Mail Criteria 4.1 – 5.2 Essay 4.1 At Proactive Personnel we always use Royal Mail to send out our mail our packages. The options we use to send out our outgoing mail are 1st class, 2nd class and special delivery. The way we are able to tell what mail needs to go 1st, 2nd or special delivery is by our employees placing the mail in the specific trays to which they need, where as special delivery is known by ‘rec’ been wrote on the mail. 4.2 The way our postage prices are worked out is by using the Royal Mail franking machine. We choose the option that we require for the mail, then we weigh the mail/package on the scale on the franking machine to which we are then given a price. Once this is done we simply place the mail under and the machine stamps the mail. If the mail is too big there are special stickers used which get stamped and stuck on the package. 4.3 At Proactive Personnel we do not require the use of a courier service. If we ever did need to use one there are numerous companies ranging from DHL to Fedex that we could use. If we had a large parcel that needed to be delivered we would pay for the company to come collect it and then deliver it to the destination. The cost involves the labour done by the driver, the fuel and the safety of the package. 4.4 This is covered in 4.1 4.5 This is covered in 4.2 4.6 When franking the post and handling the mail we do not record the post, however we do occasionally have to top up the franking machine. This is done by an internet connection set up to the bank account. Once the machine is topped up we make a receipt using the franking machine these are then stored, to which we can see how much was used in a period of time and compare them. 4.7 The post here at Proactive Personnel is sent and received daily the quantities vary. We usually send out the post nearer the end of the day depending on how much there is to stamp it can vary from one hour before to 15 minutes before the end of the day. Wednesday we usually send the payslips out, so there is a large quantity which usually takes a while. 5.1/5.2 During the process of the all above numerous problems can happen. The problems can be the franking machine running out of ink, a letter that has been left behind, post being stamped the wrong price.

Strategic Marketing Management of Nestle Analysis

Strategic Marketing Management of Nestle Analysis The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the impact of organizational strategy in developing a marketing plan and to evaluate the component parts of a marketing plan. For this purpose a marketing plan for Nestle pure life (Bottled water by Nestle in Pakistan) is developed for understanding different components of marketing plan. Impact of Organizational Strategy on Market Plan It is very critical in todays highly competitive market to develop and adapt an approach that supports the organizations resources and nature of business. The strategy should be developed by keeping in mind all the available resources and should be so powerful that the product or service can outsell the competition. If the available resources are not considered while designing the strategies then it is quite possible that those resources will not be able to convert the inflow of customers in to profitable long term relationship. So it is very important to have a strategy that supports the resources and the expertise to implement it. Different organizations have different types of strategies, however most common are five significant strategies that affect the marketing plan of the organizations. Market Leadership Strategy If an organization has to maintain the position of market leadership then the marketing plan will be focused towards two main factors. First is to increase the market share and second is to keep intact the existing customers by providing them value to their money they are spending to buy the companys products of services (Kathryn, 2010). Market share can be increased by finding the new markets in other demographics or expanding in to the new locations. Another way to increase the market share is to attach the competitors market share through variety of strategies. Offering several value added services helps to keep the customers intact with the organization. In this case the marketing plan will focus towards the augmented features of the product or service. Market Challenger Strategy If the organizations strategy is to be a market challenger then the marketing plan will be focused towards the small unmet needs of the customers. The marketing plan will be very aggressive and the focus will be to increase the market share in small chunks and to target the customers by promoting those features which are fulfilling their unmet needs (Kathryn, 2010). Market Follower Strategy If an organization is following market follower strategy then the marketing plan will not be very aggressive (Dibb, 2001). The markets are already identified and researched by the competitors and the market plan will target those weak points which are left by the competitors and the better solutions will be provided to the customers. Market Niche Strategy Organizations can also divide the market in to small segments/chunks and prepare the marketing plan for each segment. This allows the organization to influence the customers more deeply with the marketing campaign as the focus is on a particular segment. For instance the marketing plan of a cosmetic can target the women between the age limit of 20-25 years. Alliance Strategy The organization can also form strategic alliances to increase the impact of the marketing plan. The strategic alliances enables the organization to offer new products or value added services to the customers and the marketing plan focuses on promoting the benefits of the alliance of the organization to the customers (Kotler, 2003). Component Parts of a Marketing Plan Marketing plan refers to that document which outlines the actions and details that are required to be undertaken in order to achieve one or more marketing objectives. Marketing plan can either be for a brand, or for a product or service or even for a whole product line. Marketing plans can cover the marketing objectives of up to five years and the marketing objectives are aligned with the organizational objectives. Following are the main components of a marketing plan. Situation Analysis Situation analysis is very important and initial part for developing a marketing plan. It explains and clarifies the current position of the organization in the market. This analysis should be done fairly by the organization as exaggerating the current market position in front of the management will ultimately give a failure at the end of marketing campaign. Situation Analysis involves external, internal and customers analysis (Ward, 2010). SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis is another major part of the marketing plan as it identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the organization and the opportunities and threats for the organization. It also helps to determine the current state of the organization, but it also adds the opportunities and threats to the organization which can be focused in the marketing plan (Dibb, 2001). Marketing Goals and Objectives After SWOT analysis the organization is in much better position to set the marketing objectives and goals. Goals are the overall accomplishment that is likely to be achieved by the organization and the objectives are the benchmarks which enables the organization to meet those goals (Ward, 2010). It is very important the goals and objectives should be realistic and should reflect the mission of the company. Marketing Strategies In marketing strategy the marketing mix and the target market is discussed. Product features, placement, pricing and distribution are the four main aspects of any product or service and the marketing plan contains the blend of these strategies and marketing strategy is designed keeping in mind the target audience (Kotler, 2003). Implementation Implementation planning is another important part of the marketing plan. At first it is described that what is required to be done internally in order to get success such as employee training, employees empowerment etc. for the success of market plan. Secondly, a month-by-month marketing calendar is prepared that guides the marketing activities. Evaluation and Control Evaluating the marketing plan is very important, as this helps to identify that what is to be done in future and what not. If the marketing plan is of 3 to 5 years then periodic evaluation is necessary as changing market conditions can be costly while sticking with the old techniques. Evaluation also helps to identify whether the plan is implemented properly. Threat to Nestle Pure Life Different threats and weaknesses for Nestle pure life are identified in the marketing plan, however, the most critical threat and weakness for the product is the current economic and political condition in Pakistan. This threat is for every business operating in Pakistan, however, Nestle pure life has direct affect to the economic situation of Pakistan. As the target market of Nestle pure life is upper and middle class and due to increasing ratio of unemployment and poverty the people are moving towards the usage of simple or boiled water as spending Rs. 35 for water is becoming unaffordable for majority of middle class people. Moreover, there are several other local brands which are not up to the mark, but they sell the brand to the local market by assuring them about the quality and purity which decreases the demand of high quality product like Nestle pure life. This causes a serious threat to the brand in near future (Rosemann, 2005). Nestle Pakistan Limited Marketing Plan Nestle Pure Life Executive Summary Its manufacturing facilities are located in Sheikhupura, Kabirwala, Islamabad and Karachi, Pakistan. Nestle provides mineral water to the customers with an objective to provide value to the customers. The companys main target market is those people who believe that tap water is not hygienic. SWOT Analysis SWOT analysis helps to understand the ability of the organization internally and externally (Lyndsay, 2010). Blow is the SWOT analysis of the company: Strengths Strong distribution channel Skilled Labour Educated Staff Large number of Offerings Strong Brand Name Strong Background of the company Easy to approach Weaknesses Small Target market Lack of awareness among the target market Dependency of other government and sponsors for the arrangement of events Opportunity Favorable weather conditions (Summer most of the time) People love to enjoy eating ice cream Few and Weak competitors Threats Major players may enter in the market Legal and ethical issues Local mineral water manufacturers Economic slowdown and bad political conditions Competitors Analysis Nestle Pure Life introduce the bottled water culture. No doubt Nestle pure life is currently a dominant leader in Pakistan market in Mineral water Industry. Nestle Pure Life is currently dominating more than 80% of bottled water market share (Rosemann, 2005), when Nestle Pure Life start its bottled water business in Pakistan way back in 1998 on that particular time AVA was the major competitor in the market, but after a time period of one year AVA was acquired by the Nestle Pure Life and now currently AVA is in the business of bulk water. There are different brands of bottled mineral water but the most famous are: Nestle Pure Life Aquafina Sufi Kinley For manufacturing and distributing mineral water in Pakistan the company has to obtain licenses and have to follow the rules and regulations of Pakistan Standard Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). Particular in Lahore, gourmet is giving a very tough competition to Nestle pure life as their price is less than Nestle pure life. Moreover, gourmet is approaching the other cities and rural areas of the country and possibly will emerge as a strong competitor of Nestle pure life in near future. There are also other competitors found within a local market which include Sparklet, Acqacare, Pure, Aafi, Oura, Aabshar and many other local brands, but their market share is very low as compare to the Nestle Pure Life. Macro Environmental Analysis The Macro-Environment forces, which include political, Social-Cultural and Economic forces, affect the overall performance of the brand (Kotler, 2003). Political instability always matter in a market situation, there should be an investment security. PSQCA has approved Nestle Pure Life; Nestle Pure Life is also promoting the culture of humanity and higher labor as many people from Pakistan have got job in the different parts of the world in Nestle Food. No doubt Nestle Pure Life is a market leader, but some of the government policies affecting the marketing strategy of Nestle Pure Life as government closed many several companies by saying that they are producing un approved water for the people of Pakistan in the name of mineral water, but such kind of situation doesnt affect any marketing strategy of Nestle Pure Life because it is producing a water according to the standard which is approved by World Health Organization WHO. As far as Social and Cultural forces are concerned now the people are realizing the need of bottled water especially in cities, as they are more health conscious as compare to the people of rural areas. The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein - Bilbo Baggins :: essays research papers

The Hobbit This hobbit was a hobbit, and his name was Baggins. Baggins had lived in the neighborhood of †The Hill† some time, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most or them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected. You could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him. This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, and found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbors’ respect, but he gained- well, you will see what he gained in the end. Bilbo Baggins lived a very simple life, a life he enjoyed very much, until the day when the wizard Gandalf arrived at his door one morning. Gandalf was searching for someone to share an adventure with, but Bilbo quickly declined, saying, â€Å"We don’t want any adventures here. You might try over The Hill or across The Water,† and with that the hobbit dismissed the wandering wizard, but not before he had given the wizard an invitation for tea the next day. This of coarse, was the polite thing to do. But Gandalf saw something more in Bilbo and would not be discouraged. He left the hobbit, but not before he had scratched a sign on Bilbo’s door. The following day, Gandalf showed for tea, along with thirteen dwarves. This was the beginning of the adventures between the hobbit and the dwarves. The next day, Bilbo somehow found himself leaving his comfortable hobbit hole, and on what seemed to be an adventure. This was the beginning of not just one, but many adventures for Bilbo. The dwarves were on a quest to find and reclaim their famous treasure from the great dragon Smaug. It would be a long and difficult journey, and they felt it would be made simpler with the help of a burglar. This was what Bilbo was for, even if he didn’t know it. Bilbo didn’t want to be on the adventure, let alone play a vital role in it. But by the time the story concluded, Bilbo had changed from a well-to-do homebody into a burglar. The first time Bilbo exposed his hidden sense of adventure was early in the trip when he encountered a group of trolls. Bilbo was sent by the dwarves to investigate a strange fire in a forest, and

Harriet Tubman : Walk to Freedom Essay examples -- slaves, antislavery,

Imagine a girl and her two little brothers, toes on the edge of the sidewalk; children trying to cross a street. As a big sister, she must go first. She takes a few steps ever so carefully, looking both ways, showing her younger brothers the way. She makes it to the other side of the street then turns to wave them over, telling them to follow exactly what she did and they too would make it across safely. The two little boys take a few steps just like their sister had done, looking both ways, but they are very scared. There are cars coming and they feel they might not make it in time, so they hurry back to the safe side of the street that they had first been on. After the first try, the boys are too frightened to try again by themselves, so their older sister crosses the street again, takes the boys by the hands and leads them to the other side. That is exactly how Harriet Tubman lived her life. During her first plan to escape slavery, she went on her way with two of her brothers. Har riet reached safety, but her brothers had turned back halfway to freedom. After that incident, Harriet Tubman devoted her life to helping slaves cross the street to freedom. THESIS With a past childhood surrounded with slavery, Harriet Tubman grew up with the need to make a difference; after years of smuggling slaves to freedom, her impact on antislavery changed the nation. Topic Sentence 1 †¢ After the combining of two plantations, two slaves had a child that would one day change the face of slavery completely. †¢ When two slave owners, Pattison Brodess and Anthony Thompson, got married, their plantations combined bringing two of their slaves together. Chris McCandless

McCandless wanted to live an independent and self-reliant life. As a child, he grew up in a materialistic and dysfunctional family. Although he had a close relationship with his sister, Carine, Chris preferred isolating himself. It was unimaginably difficult for Chris to have a relationship with his father after he had found out about his father's second family. Chris's mother, Billie, didn't have much of a relationship with him either. For Chris, being alone was normal and part of his very day routine. As he got older he wanted more and more to live on his own and be in the wild. Chris and his family would go to the mountains every year to visit which gave Chris this love for nature. He wanted to live in his own Utopia, in the wild. McCandless wasn't careless or delusional. He was determined, and focused on his task at hand; to, in his own words, â€Å"no longer be poisoned by civilization, and walk alone to become lost in the wild. He met many people through-out his travels owards Alaska, but didn't stay too long to become attached to them. On April 28, 1992, James Gallien gave Christopher McCandless a ride to the Stampede Trail in Alaska where Christopher set out to begin in Journey into the wild. This was the last date that anyone ever saw Christopher McCandless alive. Walking into Denali National Park with a . 22 caliber rifle and a 10 pound bag of rice isn't necessarily ridiculous, but expecting to survive an entire summer off nothing but the land and wild game certainly is.Chris read many books by his favorite, Jack London being one. Jack wrote a book about the wild and the dangers of being in it, which is where Chris got some inspiration from. Chris carved the phrase â€Å"Jack London is king† in a tree stump near his campsite.. Chris writing that phrase shows that his quest went farther than finding himself. Chris wanted a connection with nature. He did what he was striving for and although his ending was tragic, he still did it by himself and w ithout anyone or anything. Chris McCandless Mishandles was not crazy, he wasn't stupid, and he defiantly was not looking for a way to die. Although some may think of them as selfish, he had his reasons for packing up his few belongings, leaving his family and walking â€Å"Into the Wild. † The death of Chris Mishandles was an accidental tragedy. Chris and his dad never really got along (Source One. ) They were both stubborn making it impossible to agree on anything. They both always had to be right. Chris decided to be â€Å"the bigger person† though and stick to his mother and fathers plan for IM through college. He TLD complain and he even visited them occasionally throughout his college career. He loved his family, but he couldn't handle being around them anymore. He had kept all his anger and frustration built up inside of him and his only option was to leave. He never intended to hurt his family. He just needed some time away. Chris needed some time to cool off and forget about his family troubles. Once he fo und out about his father's marriage problems, forgetting about his family problems seemed impossible. In Chrism's mind getting as far away room his dad and his family as possible was the best option. The only option. So that's what he did. He didn't mean to hurt his family or himself In any way. Some believe that Chrism's family problems had gotten the best of him and that he was ready to put an end to his life. It is ignorant to think that because he went into the Alaskan wilderness completely prepared for the amount of time that he planned on staying there. Even though Source One never mentions Chris having a map, Source two says â€Å"Counter to the portrayal in the Krause book and Penn film, ChrisMishandles carried ‘Into the wild' a wallet with multiple sources of Identification and $300 In cash. As well as a map. † If Chris had Intended to die while he was out there he wouldn't have taken the money, the ID, and especially not the map. Source One says that Chris went to the local Alaska university library to research edible plants and berried that he could gather and eat. If he didn't plan on surviving then he wouldn't have been worried about eating. He took a gun and bullets with him too. He was well equipped to get food and seemed like he planned on surviving. In Chrism's Journal entries In August he wrote that hothouse he had accomplished his goal to live In the Alaskan wilderness and thought It was time to go home. He walked all the way back to the river and couldn't cross because it was too wild. He wasn't all too concerned because he had enough knowledge and supplies to survived for a while longer. If Chris had really wanted to die in Alaska he wouldn't have waited until August to do so. For living on the streets with no permanent home for so long, Mishandles was very good with people. He met lots of them before he went to Alaska and even met a ewe while he was there. Wayne Westerners, Jan Burros, Ron Franz were a few of the people he met d uring his travels (Source One. ) He was very easy to get along with and worked hard for them. They all loved him. He didn't seem like he had a problem with getting too attached to people because he always planes on coming back. He wrote to them and kept them updated and promised to come visit. He was very good forever. The Alaskan wilderness was a very dangerous place to Just wonder into as Chris did and he found that out.He caused his family terrible worry and sorrow and would have been more observant and cautious when crossing the river. Realizing that it wouldn't be as calm in August as it was when he crossed it. He made some mistakes, but then again, don't we all? Christopher Mishandles followed his dreams and not everybody gets the chance to do that. Source one says â€Å"The peculiar thing is that he went out and did the things he dreamed about, not simply for a two-weeks' vacation in the civilized and trimmed wonderlands, but for months and months in the midst of wonder.. â € And that's exactly what Mishandles did.Yes he died, and it as dangerous, but he died successful. He followed all his dreams and accomplished all his goals before he died, which is not something everyone can claim to have done. Chris Mishandles was an independent, stubborn individual who knew what he wanted and wasn't afraid to go get it. He made a few mistakes here and there (such as crossing the river and not knowing how to clean and cook the moose) but everybody makes mistakes. His Just happened to cost him his life. He didn't go â€Å"into the wild† hoping for death. He went searching for independence and that's exactly what he found. Chris McCandless To me Chris McCandless was a dedicated and adventurous young man. He was very dedicated to the thing he loved. When people told him what to do he very rarely listened to them, so to me he was very independent. When he was put to a job he was very dedicated to it, it didn’t matter what it was. Like when he moved to the town where Wayne Westerberg live he was put to work and all the people he worked with agreed that he was a very hard working person. When Chris decided to go into the wilderness to live, he wanted to start a new life; he wants to find out who he is. Then again what his sister Carine said also seem very true about Chris, â€Å"Chris knew exactly who he was. He was searching for a place in this world that he fit into, where he could be true to himself.† He didn’t just want to think about the meaning of life, he actually wanted to live it for himself. He when traveling to find true happiness and beauty. That is the reason he did all what he did. I think Christopher McCandless went â€Å"Into the Wild† to discover what is summed up in his quote â€Å"happiness is only real when shared†, something I think he found out far too late. He went all that way to discover that something is only really worth experiencing if you can share it with someone else. Before Chris died I do think he found what he was looking for. I think that he felt that there was truth out in the wild that there wasn’t in his life at home. I think that he would have stay as long as he did if he didn’t find what he was looking for. I think that he finally found a place where he belonged and place where he finally fit in. I totally agree with what Jon Krakauer statement when he says that Chris wasn’t a nutcase, sociopath, or an outcast. I think he was a very upbeat and inspirational person.I love how he was and how he thought. I think it was very unique of him to think that live on his own in Alaska would help him find out who he was . I can compare myself to Chris in many ways like when he likes to be alone to think and when he can read his favorite authors books over and over again. With a wealthy and successful family he ditch virtually everything for a new life, it think that was very brave of him. He never had anything planed he just went with it. He never knows what life had waiting for him out there but I’m pretty sure he could wait to find out. I don’t think he was scared in  anyway, I feel like he was more curious and excited then scared.Chris made a decision and many others on his two year journey to Alaska. He made these decisions with certain traits that he possesses, whether they were strengths that helped him or weaknesses that lead to his unfortunate death by starvation but I felt that they all made him out to be who he was. If only he would have brought more things with him on his journey, he could have been destine for many great things.
